
The difference between a burst pipe and a slow leak is the difference between a 3am emergency call-out and a Tuesday afternoon scheduled appointment. Sydney mains pressure runs around 500 kPa typically. A burst 15mm copper line sprays roughly 80 litres per minute. A burst 25mm line can release 200+ litres per minute.

Check 1 — Visible flow
Walk to the affected area. Look (and listen) for:
- Water spraying visibly from the failure point → burst
- Standing water spreading visibly across the floor → burst (or a slow leak that’s been undiscovered for hours)
- Damp patch slowly enlarging over minutes → slow leak
- Stained area with no current visible water → slow leak, intermittent leak, or recently-resolved leak
Check 2 — Audible sound
In a quiet house with all taps closed, listen carefully near the suspected leak location:
- Loud rushing or hissing sound → burst pipe at full pressure
- Steady drip-drip-drip → slow leak
- Occasional drop sound every few minutes → very slow leak
- No audible sound but visible damp → very slow leak or capillary moisture from a more distant source
Check 3 — System pressure check
Walk to a tap furthest from the suspected leak. Open it briefly:
- No water or weak trickle → significant burst diverting most of the system flow
- Reduced but functional pressure → moderate leak diverting some flow
- Normal pressure → slow leak below the threshold of affecting overall system pressure
Combine the three checks: any combination indicating significant flow at the leak point + reduced system pressure + audible rushing = burst pipe, requiring immediate emergency response. Visible damp without audible flow + normal system pressure = slow leak, scheduled response is appropriate.
What to do if it’s a burst pipe
Emergency response sequence:
- Shut off water at the meter immediately. Front boundary, green box, lever or wheel valve on house side of meter.
- Cut power if water has reached anything electrical. Main switch at the meter box.
- Move soft furnishings out of the water spread.
- Photograph the scene before any cleanup.

Common slow leak locations
Different patterns for slow leaks:
Pinhole corrosion in copper supply lines. Typically appears behind kitchen and bathroom fixtures. Slow weep developing over weeks, sometimes accelerating to a burst over months.
Hot water unit cold inlet drips. Slight weep at the cold inlet fitting on hot water units. Often goes unnoticed for months because the drip lands inside the unit cabinet.
Toilet pan-to-floor seal failures. Slight ammonia smell, occasional damp around the toilet base. Putty seals on older WC pans crack and weep.
Tap cartridge failures. Slow drip from the spout despite the tap being closed. Internal cartridge worn. Easy fix; not an emergency.
Cistern flush valve weeping. Very slow continuous flow into the toilet bowl, sometimes audible as a faint hiss. Wastes significant water over months but isn’t an emergency.
What about something in between?
Some leaks sit between burst and slow:
Moderate leaks (5-15 litres per minute) — significant flow but not catastrophic. Examples: partial joint failures, cracked fittings, deteriorated seals on hot water unit relief valves. Treat as urgent (same-day response) but not necessarily 3am emergency.
Intermittent bursts — the failure point opens and closes based on pressure cycling, system temperature, or external load. Looks like a slow leak when measured but is actually storing up to a catastrophic failure. Investigate any intermittent leak promptly.
Hidden leaks — significant flow but inside walls, under floors, or in ceiling cavities. May appear as no visible water but presents through unexplained water bill spikes, damp marks appearing distant from any plumbing, or musty smells. Specialist leak detection required.
For moderate or hidden leaks, urgency depends on the secondary damage potential. Active flow into wall cavities or ceiling spaces is structurally damaging regardless of visible water at ground level. Ring a plumber promptly even if it doesn’t feel like an emergency.
